“The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Emmanuel— which means, God with us.” Matthew 1.23 (NIV)
Jesus’ incarnation, his entrance into the world, is the greatest proof of God’s love for humankind; an unlimited, unconditional, and real love. God who made himself human like us, who gave up his divine prerogative and emptied himself of all but love to come amongst us.
Jesus came to this world to be our Saviour; to restore the relationship that was damaged in the garden and lead us into the presence of the Father.
He is our Emmanuel, the God who is present in every aspect of our lives: guiding our paths; walking with us; consoling and comforting in the way that only he can. As the writer to the Hebrews notes, “We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin”. Jesus is neither indifferent nor oblivious to our needs. He knows all the things we need to have in our spiritual, emotional, physical and material life.
The confidence of Jesus’ presence in our lives and his care for us is very important, because it gives us peace, security, hope. As we approach the season of Advent, let us step out together to proclaim the birth of the Son of God and the coming of our very present God. Alleluia.
